Food Day Canada

Mentoring the Next Generation

For over 26 years, we have been dedicated to championing a deep respect for local, sustainable ingredients and the people who source and grow them. The persistence of that vision is enabled by our long-standing philosophy of teaching and mentorship.

Every summer, River Café employs interns from a wide range of culinary institutes, and  each of us grows and benefits from the exercise.
In celebration of Food Day Canada, this year's tasting menu (available all weekend) has been carefully crafted by our talented interns, in partnership with a senior member of staff. The menu not only celebrates ingredients and techniques, but is also an expression of each cooks unique background, experience, and nostalgia.

Gather around our table on August 4th as we join with Canadians
from across the country in a national celebration of local food.

Shakespeare by the Bow

The Two Gentlemen of Verona

Shakespeare in Prince’s Island Park has a long and treasured history in our city. Theatre Calgary’s 2018 production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona gives all Calgarians an opportunity to enjoy theatre in this gorgeous natural setting throughout the summer.

Celebrate Alberta’s emerging artists this summer with Theatre Calgary’s Shakespeare by the Bow! Known as Shakespeare’s first comedy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona tells the tale of friendship between best pals Proteus and Valentine who fall in and out of bromance over and over again. Join us in idyllic Prince’s Island Park for this silly comedy featuring adventure, outlaws, and even a dog!

Picnic in the Park

Throughout the summer season River Café offers picnic baskets filled with all the seasonal specialties from our kitchen and bakery.
A perfect suggestion for guests looking to enjoy a leisurely afternoon at Prince's Island Park or planning to bike the city's pathway system.

Anita Stewarts Canada File

An excerpt from Anita Stewart's profile of River Café and Deane House from Everett Potter's Travel Report

“Calgary’s stories are legion and restaurateur Sal Howell is one of the Prairie’s finest culinary chroniclers. On the menus of her two restaurants, River Café and Deane House, she paints a loving picture of this low slung Prairie city with its deep connection to the food-scape that is the essence of western Canada.”
